User talk:Robin
hi Robin! --- Zhurnaly 07:52, 29 February 2012 (EST)
- Hi! It has just occurred to me -- I need to set up a guestbook, editable without registration! Perhaps you can give me a hand sometime? Robin 15:54, 29 February 2012 (EST)
hmmm, I really don't know anything about Wiki "guestbook" setup ... there are tiny Perl scripts (etc.) to do guestbook-like functions, but maybe you should just create a page called Guestbook? ... but how to make it writeable without registration is another question ... btw, remind me to send you copies of my ".htaccess" file etc. --- http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Short_URL talks about how you can make even prettier/shorter URLs for MediaWiki installations, but it requires editing ".htaccess" or "httpd.conf" ... Zhurnaly 07:21, 1 March 2012 (EST)
- I can't see a way to get at httpd.conf, but [there's a manual for doing it with just .htaccess] ... Robin 19:58, 3 March 2012 (EST)
- You're right, I think one has to be root or otherwise privileged to edit the httpd.conf file — but .htaccess is less dangerous to mess with — I can show you the pattern-matching rules to transform URLs ... as per the Oddmuse documentation: "Redirection is easy, because you can control redirection using .htaccess files. URL rewriting is hard, because it affects the entire server, thus on shared hosting systems you will not be able to use it, unless you can convince your web hosting provider to do it for you." — Zhurnaly 21:25, 3 March 2012 (EST)
here's my ".htaccess" file:
RedirectMatch permanent ^/oddmuse/* http://zhurnaly.com/cgi-bin/wiki RedirectMatch permanent ^/ww/* http://zhurnaly.com/cgi-bin/wiki RedirectMatch permanent ^/([0-9A-Z].*) http://zhurnaly.com/cgi-bin/wiki/$1
what this does is tell the web page server to map all attempts to view the Oddmuse directory to the wiki server, and likewise old-format calls to the old pre-Oddmuse server http://zhurnal.net/ww/zw?PageNameGoesHere and likewise map any call to a file name that begins with a digit or a capital letter --- enabling very short URLs like http://zhurnaly.com/RadRob etc.
I can't remember how to find my "httpd.conf" file --- maybe it's something one shouldn't mess with? --- Zhurnaly 09:12, 1 March 2012 (EST)

btw, do you ever glance at http://www.aldaily.com/ = "Arts & Letters Daily"? --- some good links there, at least a few times/week IMHO ... Zhurnaly 07:29, 6 March 2012 (EST)
Scrapbook bookmarklets
as we discussed the other day, see Scrapbook Bookmarklet and Wiki Scrapbook Bookmarklet for info and source code that makes it easy to highlight a chunk of text on a web page and, with one click, save a copy of that highlighted text (along with a link back to the page) in a "Scrapbook" for later reference ...
